Two forms have been chosen, a simple rectangular
vase and a series of oval shapes, each have designs applied to them
in the form of laser cut veneers. Designs are both figurative and
geometric presenting strikingly elegant
sculptural forms.

Laser cut ultra thin slivers of mother of pearl
shell inlayed into burr American walnut veneer.
Design and process are very contemporary. Laser
cut, dyed and natural veneers are assembled, reverso, onto clear
self-adhesive film before being bonded to the plastic substrate to
then be sanded and polished. The vase is constructed from plastic
that is machined and heat formed then bonded together and sealed
with a waterproof sealant.

Created like a 'jigsaw puzzle' images can
contains up to 500 individually cut pieces of dyed and natural wood

produced in Italy and are chosen for their particular suitability of
grain and shade that best represents the natural form
I want to portray.

Marquetry is still a very personal process
(despite the technology that can now be employed) from the artists
initial sketch, to his hand coloured layout and the selection of
veneers, grain and colour, it is still a highly skilled art form
that demands the artist’s creative input at all stages. Every piece
has its own unique appeal, this is inherent in the nature
of the medium.
