This piece,
more than most is the prototype image ; one of frailty against the
overwhelming power of the sea. The image of an almost ‘Heath
Robinson’ structure – totally unsuited for the task, held on a
massive rock in the ocean.

Further the
mass of the base gives scale – smallness and insignificance…….
Almost a sense of being improvised, thrown together from
inappropriate materials – yet with a strong ‘ Victorian’ cast iron
frame. A kit lighthouse, no doubt patented by a noble Victorian who
had never ventured further than the Serpentine
!
Built entirely
from ‘found’ material the construction echoes the aesthetic of the
prototype, reclaimed timbers form the base, that in turn symbolises
a harbour pier with the forged steel mooring ring. Natural rocks are
the base onto which the structure is secured, timber, card, Plastic
and corrugated metal sheeting form the lighthouse. Like the early
prototype lighthouses, an improvisation of many parts that clung to
precarious rocks in wild oceans, protecting others whilst putting
the protectors at risk !
